Should you factory-order a Ford or buy one from stock?

5 min read · Reviewed 2026-10-14 by Marcus Bell, General Manager

When buying from stock makes sense

You need it this month, your current vehicle is failing, or you're flexible on color and small options. You can drive it, inspect it and take it home the same day.

When a factory order is worth the wait

You want a specific package (towing, off-road, tech) that's rarely stocked, or you'd rather not pay for a sunroof or premium paint you don't care about.

  • Pick exact trim, engine, color and packages
  • Lock in the price agreement in writing at order time
  • Track the build with status updates from the dealer

How long does an order take?

It varies by model, plant schedule and season. Ask the dealer for the current scheduling window for your model before you commit, and get it in writing.

Price protection and incentives

Ask whether incentives are locked at order time or at delivery, and whether the price can change if the model year changes. Read the order agreement before signing.

Pro tip from our team

Ask your salesperson to search incoming allocation first. The exact build you'd order may already be on a truck headed to Houston.

FAQ

Common follow-up questions

Can I cancel a Ford factory order?

Usually yes, but deposit terms vary by dealer. Ask how much of the deposit is refundable before you place the order.

Will my ordered vehicle cost more than one in stock?

Not necessarily. You only pay for the options you choose, which can make an ordered vehicle cheaper than a loaded stock unit.
