How to inspect a used truck before you buy

7 min read · Reviewed 2026-10-14 by Marcus Bell, General Manager

Underneath and outside

Look at the frame rails, crossmembers and brake lines for heavy rust, kinks or fresh undercoating that might hide damage. Check panel gaps and paint color match for signs of past repairs.

Tires, brakes and suspension

Uneven tire wear points to alignment or suspension problems. Push down on each corner; the truck should settle quickly, not bounce.

Signs of hard towing

A worn hitch receiver, a heavily scratched bed, a trailer brake controller and wiring are clues the truck towed often. That's not a deal-breaker, but check transmission service records.

The test drive checklist

  • Cold start: listen for knocks or ticking
  • Shift through every gear, including reverse
  • Engage 4WD high and low in a safe spot
  • Test the A/C on max for 10 minutes (it's Houston)
  • Check every window, lock and camera

Paperwork

Read the vehicle history report and service records. Confirm the VIN on the dash, door jamb and title all match.

Pro tip from our team

After a heavy rain season, check carpets, seat rails and under the spare tire for water lines or silt. Flood damage is a real risk around Houston.

FAQ

Common follow-up questions

How much does a pre-purchase inspection cost?

Typically one to two hundred dollars at an independent shop. It's cheap insurance on a truck that costs tens of thousands.

How can I tell if a used truck was in a flood?

Look for silt or rust in odd places, a musty smell, fogged lights and corrosion under the dash. A history report may show a flood or salvage title, but not always.
