Texas vehicle sales tax, title and fees, explained

4 min read · Reviewed 2026-10-14 by Marcus Bell, General Manager

Sales tax

Texas charges 6.25% motor vehicle sales tax. When you trade in a vehicle, the tax applies to the price minus the trade-in value.

Title and registration

The state charges a title application fee and a base registration fee, and counties can add local fees. The dealer collects these and files the paperwork for you.

Inspection

Texas ended the annual safety inspection for most passenger vehicles starting in 2025. Vehicles registered in certain counties, including Harris County, still need an emissions test.

The documentary fee

Dealers may charge a documentary fee for preparing the paperwork. It should be the same for every buyer and shown on the deal sheet, not added at the signing table.

Pro tip from our team

Ask for the 'out-the-door' price. It's the only number that includes every tax and fee.

FAQ

Common follow-up questions

Is Texas sales tax charged on the full price if I trade in?

No. Texas calculates motor vehicle sales tax on the purchase price minus your trade-in value.

Do I still need a state inspection in Houston?

Most passenger vehicles no longer need the annual safety inspection, but Harris County vehicles still need an emissions test. Check current rules with the Texas DMV.
