Houston heat: what it does to your battery, tires and A/C

5 min read · Reviewed 2026-10-14 by Marcus Bell, General Manager

Batteries fail in heat, not just cold

High temperatures speed up the chemical wear inside a battery. Many batteries in hot climates last three to five years. A quick test at each service visit catches a weak one before it strands you.

Tire pressure and heat

Pressure rises as tires heat up. Check it in the morning against the number on your door-jamb sticker, not the maximum printed on the tire.

Keeping the A/C strong

A replaced cabin air filter improves airflow and air quality. If the system blows warm or smells musty, have it checked for leaks or a failing component.

  • Park in shade or use a sunshade
  • Replace the cabin filter about once a year
  • Run the A/C briefly in winter to keep seals lubricated

Interior and paint

UV damages dashboards and clear coat. A sunshade and regular wash and wax help the vehicle hold its value.

Pro tip from our team

Keep water and a phone charger in the car from May to September. A stall in August heat is more than an inconvenience.

FAQ

Common follow-up questions

How long does a car battery last in Houston?

Often around three to five years, sometimes less in extreme heat. Have it tested at each service visit after year two.

Why is my A/C not cold enough?

Common causes are low refrigerant from a leak, a clogged cabin filter or a failing compressor or fan. A diagnostic check pinpoints which.
